Codes and Conventions of openings-The Dark Knight
Conventions of a film opening
|
Codes used to convey this convention (e.g.
technical, symbolic, written)
|
The Hook!
|
The way in which it starts with a symbolic reference
of the main villain the joker e.g. it starts with clown masks. It
also shows an interest to the viewers as it opens with silence and the view
of a skyscraper as the camera focuses on a window in particular, the scene
crosses over to let us see what’s behind the window were an instant smash and
two men wearing clown masks suddenly shoot a zip wire across immediately they
are up to something which draws the audience to focus on them. Then it show a
man standing on the edge of the side walk from a low ground shot it gets the
audience thinking straight away and wanting to know more because he too is
also holding a clown mask but has not put it on yet?
|
Set the scene (time? Setting?)
|
Is shown as a technically. The scene starts with a long
shot of Gotham city then into an establishing shot showing off the angles of the city this is
technical for it shows us it is present time and is set in the city.
|
Introduce characters
|
The director uses unknown assailants in the intro
and later on it relates to the main
villain (joker). This is shown through technical and symbolic references. Each
member of the robbery is there for a specific job e.g. three armed robbers
enter through the front of the bank they are there to take hostages and make
sure it all goes smoothly when loading up and the two guys who enter through the
roof, one is the technician who knows how to work a high powered drill to get
into the mobs vault and the other is to disable the alarms and help out then
there is a bus driver who help with loading up. In addition there are the
hostages and bank manager who tries to kill off the robbers with a shot gun.
|
Introduce the genre
|
This is mainly technical of the shots of action
that appear throughout the scene but
also includes symbolic stuff to tell the audience it is an action, thriller.
|
Credits
|
the director (Christopher Nolan) does not show who
is in the film as he has done with all of the dark knight trilogy, the
director shows a symbolic way to open the film. After the warner brother logo
and DC comics intro in the dark knight film it show an explosive blue fire
coming at the screen with the dark knight icon coming through the fire then
immerging with it. Full credit are at the end followed by a cut scene after.
|
Narrative
|
Is shown as technically . It shows a set plan of
robbing a bank that holds money by the mob the joker robs them to get their
attention a lot of this is symbolic and technical for as each part of the
plan works out and a unique skill is used e.g. one of the guys who first
enters on the roof, he is there to disable the secret alarm system then is
killed by the technician as this
happens one by one the joker has instructed each robber the take out one
another when there part of the job is done for one less cut of the money
until the last robber standing turns out to be (SPOILER) the joker.

interrogation scene plan
Interrogation scene: remember
180 degree rule!
Lighting-light in centre of table high lighting face and
showing off a dark side, contrast of character.
Shots-over the shoulder shot, close ups, extreme close up
(to show eyes beaming around the room) , medium shot,
Angles-low angle at the start to show a POV of the suspect
showing the interrogator has a higher power, and high angle of the interrogator
to show the higher authority.
Sound-foot step, echo, sound bounces off the walls, closed
in (compact) for sound like tapping and dramatically.

Something like this would help the project
have the touch of a tense, dark atmosphere and we could enhance the light in
the shot to cover the whole screen to show a flash back or use natural lighting
between scene to show the present reality.

film typography
Night of the living dead: The Typography has a red bold, worn away (as if it looks like a splat of blood) they have chosen this because it symbolises the mark of death from the undead (not a clean kill as if the text has emerged from someone being bitten by a zombie) and is used to enhance the zombies red eye indicating the rage and thirst for blood. Plus throughout George Romero's(Directors) zombie series to show the creatures of the dead are back for more bloodshed.

Casino Royal(007): The Typography is bold and very straight with no fancy flicks and has the O's as a 0 with a gun on the end but it is in the shape of a 7 showing it is a 007(bond) film. It also has a glow effect with a trail of mist suggesting there is a mystery within the plot.

The Terminator:Its Typography has a scifi touch with a chrome look indicating it has something to do with a futuristic machine and it gives off the look of a retro 70's-80's feel with a future lazer effect. This helps it fit onto Arnold's leather jacket making it easy to read and put's Arnold in the spot light of he is THE TERMINATOR.

Jurassic Park:The Typography is very bold showing an interest look (amusement/circus look) to show it's appeal to the audience because this is the very straight forward looking titles because the message is within the look and sound of typography (its exaggerating a theme park where you can see real life dinosaurs) it fits together well and colour has the bright with dark to give you a personal opinion and is always linking to the bones of a T-Rex in the back ground.

Star Trek: Its Typography is very slanted to an angle showing it is a thick chunk of metal this indicates that its almost like the ships and future elements they use in the film. It also shows a a small dim shine (almost like a shine of a star) throughout the middle, giving it a scifi look and symbolises there is hope.

Toy Story: Its Typography has more of a friendly look with colours like yellow, blue and red. Its uses a bend effect with the letters to show its like a toy movement effect. and it has a red box surrounding the story and is symbolism for adventure because it has the word toy popping out.

Sucker Punch:The Typography is very fancy but lazy with the flicks at the edge of the letters, it fits in with the films style (a dezel punk look) and has the sun rising at the bottom of the title this shows off the shine on the metal of the text and is very fantasy looking for posh text and half polished and spots of dirt do not usually fit together.

Camera angles/movement
EWS(extreme long shot) acts like a establishing shot to let the audience see where the scene is set.

VWS(very wide shot) used for placing the main protagonist into the scene and focuses more on location before diving into the narrative.

WS(wide shot) can show the main protagonists body language and fits in the frame as naturally as possible.

MS(mid shot) used to focus on character's gesture and over the shoulder shot and is framed from the waste up.

Cut-In, used to close in on protagonist' gesture.

CA(cut away) used to show multiple protagonists on set.

Two-Shot, used to show two main protagonists in one frame side by side or facing each other as if you were watching it side on.

POV(point of view shot) used to show the scene through the protagonists eyes this is to point the audience to a new interest in the scene.

Film companies
Warner Brothers (known as WB) they are a big hit company that is well funded due to the profits of big smash hit block busters e.g the dark knight trilogy, harry potter, and the new hobbit series, and up coming films like batman vs superman dawn of justice, Lego movie 2, and conjuring series. All of these release when major other films hit cinemas and Warner brothers higher famous director to make great and decent films to get as far as possible in the box office selling. They also make video games like the batman arkham games or apps stuff that appeals to technology audiences so that it promotes there company. not all of this has to be a big hit on big screens they also do stuff like the loony toons on a channel called boomerang who pay WB to use there product and they also release short films that may not be able to make it to the big screen so it released on DVD and Blue Ray instead e.g they release short film titles like DC animated series or Scooby Doo is owned by WB and as long as there product and merchandise is selling they keep making a large amount money it like a cycle pay every one from companies budget and release the products and make a much larger sum of money win win. However there are film companies like Film 4, who make low budget films such as the inbetweeners, 40 year old virgin, street dance Asylum, Mock Buster made transmorphers and many others all have low budget films but have a good story. small companies like film 4 usually collaborate with other companies so that they all come together and they all pitch in to make the movie or they seek help to make the movie from a funder e.g. UK lottery fund makes films like street dance, pugsey the movie and even harry hills movie and any movie based off of British talent or films about a celebrity's who need a big hit and would entertain the audience and make a come back. They also have a partners like coca cola and kfc or even pepsi parter with these low companies to help fund there projects. But not all is good because in 2007 a paramount product known as transformers was scheduled to come out at the end of that year but as it was leading up to its big premier Asylum and mock buster released it two days before transformers but when paramount heard of this and filed a complaint saying that they where copying there ideas and taking advantage of there product so in the end no further action was taken but this was not over for in 2012 two more films were made 1 being american battle ship again on the year battle ship was being release and in the end yet another law suit was sent saying it was copy right so they just changed the name to american war ship but of course another film known as the hobbit was to premier that year as well again Asylum went ahead and made yet another film known as age of the hobbit and was told never to release

AS Media Preliminary Exercise
This is me and my groups film edit of the Preliminary Excise- We started on this to show numerous shots such as, match on action shot, over the shoulder shot (obeying the 180 degree rule) we did this to show that not only could we film a short clip of shots but to use software that puts together certain takes that has come out as this short clip.
Main Exercise
The Titles and Opening of a new fiction film,to last a maximum of 2 minutes.
The purpose: The purpose of a film opening is to show action and begin the viewers interest so they get immediately hooked into the film. The film opening will also clearly state the genre of the film, you will also most likely see either the protagonist or antagonists.
Timing conventions: Most film openings are around 2 minutes long. However major blockbusters may be up to 5 minutes.
Set the scene (year of setting, location etc.)
Introduce the key characters: Protagonist, Antagonist, sidekick etc.
Introduce pre plot or beginning of the narrative. Establishes platform/ scene.
Key credits such as production company, logos and director.
Usually starts with equilibrium. A key event will occur.
Codes: Media students identify three categories of codes that may be used to convey meanings in media messages:
SYMBOLIC CODES,(which refer to objects, setting, body language, clothing and colour).Inception has six main protagonists three of which are holding a gun symbolising it is a action movie. There body language shows us that something is coming , Although the girl in the back ground is in casual wear the men are in smart business suits showing us that there is a dangerous agreement involved, And the setting is in the middle of a street in the fore ground but however in the background the street has lifted up as if it is folded this shows a twist into the world that they are in.
WRITTEN
CODES (In the
form of
headlines,
captions, speech bubbles and language style). The dark knight rises has its font is bold and as bright white to stand out of the black in the background Also there is a symbol of a broken grey bat behind the title symbolising the end of he will be broken in this next chapter. It has a caption of "A FIRE WILL RISE" resembling to Batman in the flamed image of a bat in the background and also links to the title.
Conventions:
There are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre specific. For example, in Westerns fights scenes are generally shot from a low angle, the setting is usually dusty and desolate, and even the sounds used within the scene are conventional, such as castanets, or some sort of whistle.

Camera Shots
2) long shot: this shot shows a medium distance depending on where the audience stands looking at the screen its a shot that includes the whole of the characters body from top to bottom of the screen frames and has plenty of back ground and images /Full Shot
3) Medium shot: this shot shows a character from the waste up and is used for speaking scenes and close up action scenes only. There are two variations of this- the two shot and the three shot which includes two or three characters in a shoot.
4) Up close shot: this shot is one with not a lot of background showing and shows audience facial features and is shown only when characters are interacting with another character or object with this shot it could take us into the mind of what the characters are thinking in present time.
5) Extreme close up: is a close up that magnified beyond what the human eye can see. this shot is used as a close up on human eyes the mouth nose or anybody part. its is used as a dramatical effect and gets the audience to look at one whole part and not get distracted with the back ground.

Poduction Projects
Brief:
Preliminary:
Produce a continuity exercise which involves a character opening a door, crossing the room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character; with whom they exchange a couple of lines of dialogue. The task should demonstrate.
1)Match on action, is changing the angle and size of the shot when the character is facing towards action.
2)Shot/reverse shot, is when the characters are communicating to one another. When one talks its a shoulder shot of the other character perspective/ listening to the other character making, the audience feels like they are apart of the film.
3)180 degree rule is when the camera is shot from one side only so when the characters are communicating it shows them facing towards each other not in the opposite direction which would be shot across the line that links the characters.
