AS Media Preliminary Exercise

This is me and my groups film edit of the Preliminary Excise- We started on this to show numerous shots such as, match on action shot, over the shoulder shot (obeying the 180 degree rule) we did this to show that not only could we film a short clip of shots but to use software that puts together certain  takes that has come out as this short clip.

Main Exercise

The Titles and Opening of a new fiction film,to last a maximum of 2 minutes.

The purpose: The purpose of a film opening is to show action and begin the viewers interest so they get immediately hooked into the film. The film opening will also clearly state the genre of the film, you will also most likely see either the protagonist or antagonists.
Timing conventions: Most film openings are around 2 minutes long. However major blockbusters may be up to 5 minutes.

Set the scene (year of setting, location etc.)

Introduce the key characters: Protagonist, Antagonist, sidekick etc.

Introduce pre plot or beginning of the narrative. Establishes platform/ scene.

Key credits such as production company, logos and director.

Usually starts with equilibrium. A key event will occur

Codes: Media students identify three categories of codes that may be used to convey meanings in media messages:

TECHNICAL CODES, (which include camera techniques, framing, depth of field, Mise en scene, editing,  lighting and sound). Like Avengers, it has a mise en scene setting in New York that is currently under fire from a unknown threat with the Avenger's in the foreground ready to fight and has a beam of light with a crashing ship in background. In the scene at the end it shows a resemblance to this poster and the sounds in it would be of thors harmer loud explosions and dramatical enhanced sounds of hitting

SYMBOLIC CODES,(which refer to objects, setting, body language, clothing and colour).Inception has six main protagonists three of which are holding a gun symbolising it is a action movie. There body language shows us that something is coming , Although the girl in the back ground is in casual wear the men are in smart  business suits showing us that there is a dangerous agreement involved, And the setting is in the middle of a street in the fore ground but however in the background the street has lifted up as if it is folded this shows a twist into the world that they are in.
WRITTEN CODES (In the form of headlines, captions, speech bubbles and language style). The dark knight rises has its font is bold and  as bright white to stand out of the black in the background Also there is a symbol of a broken grey bat behind the title symbolising the end of he will be broken in this next chapter. It has a caption of "A FIRE WILL RISE" resembling to Batman in the flamed image of a bat in the background and also links to the title.

Conventions:

Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something, and in the case of media texts, they are generally accepted patterns of code that communicate a particular message.

There are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre specific. For example, in Westerns fights scenes are generally shot from a low angle, the setting is usually dusty and desolate, and even the sounds used within the scene are conventional, such as castanets, or some sort of whistle.

Camera Shots

1)  Extreme long shot: this shot is taken from more than a mile away setting the scene e.g holly wood. It is also known as the established shot. it shows the outsides of buildings landscapes even famous tourist sites to show a well known location.

2) long shot: this shot shows a medium distance depending on where the audience stands looking at the screen its a shot that includes the whole of the characters body from top to bottom of the screen frames and has plenty of back ground and images /Full Shot

3) Medium shot: this shot shows a character from the waste up and is used for speaking scenes and close up action scenes only. There are two variations of this- the two shot and the three shot which includes two or three characters in a shoot.

4) Up close shot: this shot is one with not a lot of background showing and shows audience facial features and is shown only when characters are interacting with another character or object with this shot it could take us into the mind of what the characters are thinking in present time.

5) Extreme close up: is a close up that magnified beyond what the human eye can see. this shot is used as a close up on human eyes the mouth nose or anybody part. its is used as a dramatical effect and gets the audience to look at one whole part and not get distracted with the back ground.

Poduction Projects

Brief:

Preliminary:

Produce a continuity exercise which involves a character opening a door, crossing the room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character; with whom they exchange a couple of lines of dialogue. The task should demonstrate.

1)Match on action, is changing the angle and size of the shot when the character is facing towards action.

2)Shot/reverse shot, is when the characters are communicating to one another. When one talks its a shoulder shot of the other character perspective/ listening to the other character making, the audience feels like they are apart of the film.

3)180 degree rule is when the camera is shot from one side only so when the characters are communicating it shows them facing towards each other not in the opposite direction which would be shot across the line that links the characters.
