Conventions of a film opening

Conventions of a film opening

Codes used to convey this convention (e.g. technical, symbolic, written)
The Hook!

The way in which it starts with a symbolic reference of the main villain  the  joker e.g. it starts with clown masks. It also shows an interest to the viewers as it opens with silence and the view of a skyscraper as the camera focuses on a window in particular, the scene crosses over to let us see what’s behind the window were an instant smash and two men wearing clown masks suddenly shoot a zip wire across immediately they are up to something which draws the audience to focus on them. Then it show a man standing on the edge of the side walk from a low ground shot it gets the audience thinking straight away and wanting to know more because he too is also holding a clown mask but has not put it on yet?
Set the scene (time? Setting?)

Is shown as a technically. The scene starts with a long shot of Gotham city then into an establishing shot  showing off the angles of the city this is technical for it shows us it is present time and is set in the city.
Introduce characters

The director uses unknown assailants in the intro and later on it relates  to the main villain (joker). This is shown through technical and symbolic references. Each member of the robbery is there for a specific job e.g. three armed robbers enter through the front of the bank they are there to take hostages and make sure it all goes smoothly when loading up and the two guys who enter through the roof, one is the technician who knows how to work a high powered drill to get into the mobs vault and the other is to disable the alarms and help out then there is a bus driver who help with loading up. In addition there are the hostages and bank manager who tries to kill off the robbers with a shot gun.
Introduce the genre

This is mainly technical of the shots of action that  appear throughout the scene but also includes symbolic stuff to tell the audience it is an action, thriller.
Credits

the director (Christopher Nolan) does not show who is in the film as he has done with all of the dark knight trilogy, the director shows a symbolic way to open the film. After the warner brother logo and DC comics intro in the dark knight film it show an explosive blue fire coming at the screen with the dark knight icon coming through the fire then immerging with it. Full credit are at the end followed by a cut scene after.
Narrative

Is shown as technically . It shows a set plan of robbing a bank that holds money by the mob the joker robs them to get their attention a lot of this is symbolic and technical for as each part of the plan works out and a unique skill is used e.g. one of the guys who first enters on the roof, he is there to disable the secret alarm system then is killed by the technician  as this happens one by one the joker has instructed each robber the take out one another when there part of the job is done for one less cut of the money until the last robber standing turns out to be (SPOILER) the joker.
